Gibson SG Standard | 2000

A 25 year old Gibson SG Standard from the year 2000; cannot get more iconic than this!!  Here's a classic solid-body electric guitar that embodies the iconic design and tone that made the SG a staple in rock music. Crafted in Gibson’s Nashville facility, this model features a thin lightweight, double-cutaway mahogany body with sharp, beveled edges, offering excellent upper-fret access and a resonant, punchy tone. The body is finished in a striking Heritage Cherry, a deep red hue that highlights the wood’s natural grain, paired with a black pickguard for a bold, timeless look.

The guitar has a set mahogany neck with a rosewood fretboard, adorned with mother-of-pearl trapezoid inlays; a signature feature of the SG Standard. The neck profile is generally a nicely rounded, medium shape, often described as comfortable and fast-playing, with a 1 11/16" nut width and a 24 3/4" scale length. It’s equipped with Gibson Deluxe tuners for reliable tuning stability and a classic headstock featuring the traditional holly inlay and Gibson logo.

The 1990s and early 2000s are often regarded as part of Gibson’s "good tone wood" years, a period when the company was known for sourcing high-quality mahogany and rosewood. This reputation stems from the consistent use of well-seasoned, resonant woods during the '90s, which carried over into models like this 2000 SG Standard. These tone woods contribute to the guitar’s rich, fat sound, with a warmth and sustain that players prize for their depth and character, as well as the amazing close grained mahogany such as this one in particular ... qualities that set this era apart from some later production runs.

For electronics, the 2000 SG Standard is fitted with a pair of Gibson humbuckers: a 490R in the neck position and a hotter 498T in the bridge position. These pickups deliver a versatile range of tones, from warm and smooth to aggressive and biting, making it ideal for genres like rock, blues, and metal. The control layout includes dual volume and tone knobs with black "top hat" knobs, along with a three-way toggle switch for seamless pickup selection.

The hardware includes a Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece, both in chrome, ensuring solid intonation and sustain. Weighing between 6.5 and 7.5 lbs., the guitar is notably lightweight, enhancing its comfort during long performances. Professionally set up with a low action and fresh strings, ready to play right out of its original Gibson hardshell case.

Cosmetically, this 2000 SG Standard shows signs of use, such as minor scratches, light buckle rash, although it has been well-maintained during its 25 years in existence. This era’s “good wood” legacy enhances its reputation for delivering a classic AC/DC crunch when paired with a Marshall amp. Overall, the 2000 Gibson SG Standard is a rock ‘n’ roll powerhouse, blending vintage-inspired design with robust performance.
